Hi HerpNET Participants,
I'm Carol Spencer's employee at the MVZ, and I've been checking over all of the incoming georeferenced files from HerpNET. I wanted to thank everyone who has sent in files - they've all been done very well. If anyone has any completed files ready, then please send them to Carol so they can validated and then made available to the other institutions. There's no need to wait until all of your claimed countries/states are completed - it's actually best to send files in individually rather than all at once, so that any problems can be rectified from the beginning, while the individual georeferencers are still around and there is still funding available.
I've seen a few recurring issues across insitutions - so I just wanted to clear those things up.
- Make sure that no MVZ records, or records with coordinates already given, or localities with "Do not georeference" in the LatLongRemarks field are being georeferenced.
- The LatLongRemarks field is used to make comments about how you obtained the coordinates, extent, and error. Examples would be: "Traveled ca 8 km NW until reached Rio Ron Ron" or "Perine not found, error encompasses 5 km around Jeremie."
The LocalityAnnotation field is used to make comments directly to the institution, for corrections that may be needed to the locality. Examples would be "Dame Marie is not in Sud province but in Grand Anse" and "Roche Plate spelling." The two fields are usually not interchangeable. Comments such as "I cannot find Terre Longe" belong in the LatLongRemarks or DoNotGeorefBecause field.
- Be aware that gazetteers often use the mouth of the river for the coordinates recorded, not the geographic center.
Please let all your georeferencers know that they are more than welcome to e-mail me if they have any questions or just want to check up on something. Thanks very much!
