                                   ABSTRACT

A comparative study was done based on the coral genera of the Amazon

region in an attempt to correlate them with components of the

Midcontinent region during the Middle Carboniferous. Coral genera

used in this paper are those of the Subclasses Rugosa and Tabulata

from the Itaituba Formation (Morrowan), State of Para, Brazil. Their

distribution demonstrates a possible sea connection bordering the

continental margins linking the Amazon and the Midcontinent region

during the Middle Carboniferous. This hypothesis is confirmed by the

distribution of contemporaneous brachiopods which inhabited the same

         niche.
