The Washington Post of 17 August 1994 had
an article describing and discussing the new
CD-ROM of the U.S. Geological Survey for place
names in the United States. The Geographic Names
Information System CD-ROM lists about 2 million
place names in the United States, each with
latitude and longitude, and costs US$57.00.
The list was started by collecting 1.25 million
names from USGS maps. Federal, state, and local
records were systematically checked adding another
0.75 million names. Pennsylvania had 27,000 place
names on USGS maps, but no has 49,500 place names
on the CD-ROM. 57,782 features are listed on the
CD-ROM that no longer exist; many man-made features,
such as churchs and cemeteries, are eradicated by
further development.
