AREA OF CONSIDERATION: All Sources (Status and Non-

DUTIES:  Independently initiates, develops and conducts field
work and subsequent research relating to entomology;
collaborates with researchers of other institutions; participates in
activities, programs and organizations in the scientific
community; prepares for publication scholarly reports of
descriptive, analytical and theoretical nature based on personal
field work and research, studies of specimens in other
institutions and on existing scholarly publications; serves as
consultant and expert advisor on professional matters; lectures to
professional associations, civic groups, clubs and other
organizations; serves on committees; develops and maintains
collections of insects and directs an active exchange program
with other museums; develops museum exhibits and provides
consultation during exhibit construction.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The basic requirement is a Bachelor's
degree from an accredited college or university in entomology
or a related discipline or field of science, that includes at least
16 semester hours in entomology, or a combination of education
and experience equivalent to the above.  In addition, one year of
specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level is
required.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped
the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities
to perform successfully the duties of the position and which is
typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
At the GS-12 level only, Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
may be substituted for one year of specialized experience.

Selective Factor:
1. Knowledge of entomology, systematics and evolutionary
   biology of insects and related terrestrial arthropods.

Quality Ranking Factors:
1. Ability to conduct independent research in entomology,
   systematics and evolutionary biology of insects and related
   terrestrial arthropods.
2. Ability to devise innovative techniques for collection and
   analysis of novel sources of data (such as behavioral,
   ecological, molecular, etc.) in research.
3. Ability to plan, manage, and lead complex entomology
   research programs.
4. Ability to contribute to collection enhancement and care.
5. Ability to orally present scientific information to audiences of
   various backgrounds.

NOTE:  RELOCATION EXPENSES MAY BE PAID AT THE
DISCRETION OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.
