The National Science Foundation recently awarded the Intermountain Herbarium
of Utah State University (UTC) funds which, with the University's matching
funds, will enable us to purchase 137 new herbarium cabinets, most of which
are to replace substandard storage facilities that are currently in use,
some of which are to allow for expansion.
When the cabinets are delivered, it will be necessary to close the herbarium
to visitors for a few weeks. We do not know yet when this will be but, if
you are planning to visit UTC this winter, we would advise you to contact us
before making any definite plans. We will post dates when we know them.
Also, if you are planning to request a loan from UTC, we would suggest you
submit it sooner rather than later. We shall not have to suspend loan
operations, but there may be a longer than usual delay in processing those
that come in when we are moving into the new cabinets.
The storage facilities being replaced include metal cabinets that do not
close well, wooden cabinets, and open storage that looks like it was made
from scrap lumber. The metal and wood cabinets would be satisfactory for
temporary storage in a non-research facility. They will be disposed of
through sealed bid, in accordance with state law. Any individual or
institution interested in finding out how to bid on them should let us know
(Email to stipoid at cc.usu.edu or lsallen at cc.usu.edu, NOT to Taxacom).
