Conflicting genetics and morphology

Several major groups of taxa among the cichlid fishes of Lake Malawi
have been examined with allozymes and mtDNA. Many of these taxa,
divergent in trophic morphology and reproductive coloration, show
complete positive assortative mating in sympatry. With allozymes and
mtDNA they are indistinguishable; the absence of genetic differentiation
is presumably due to the extreme recency of their origin. For discussion
see Mol. Biol. Evol. 10:933 and 12:1085.
