plant ID help

To all you plant people out there.  A colleague received a piece of a plant
from a neighbor that was collected in a North Dakota field while pheasant
hunting.  He wants to know what it is.  Since it was in a field, it may not
be "native".  I do not recognize it.  I scanned the inflorescence and put
the image on a web page. I found one seed and scanned it also.  The quality
of the seed image is poor, but it may help somebody.  My suspicion is that
it is some Caryophyllaceae.  The seed is highly ornamented on the surface
as is common in that family.  The calyx is larger than most members I know.
