As a sidebar to Zolnerowich's comments ("systematists have
been their own worst enemies") ...
Perhaps we have been our own worst enemy in more ways than one.
We often don't instill in our students an appreciation for the
facility that is our cornerstone--the herbarium-as-museum. Those
of us in the curatorial community can provide endless accounts of
students who come in and attempt to "browse" specimens as they
might a library book or faculty who come and take a specimen to
show in class but never inform the curator. Perhaps if we not
only began to insist our skills as identifiers have value but
also that the herbarium is more than "just a reference collection",
we might begin to convince others in the research arena.
