9TH INTERNATIONAL AUCHENORRHYNCHA CONGRESS
17-21 FEBRUARY 1997
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

FINAL CALL FOR REGISTRATIONS

The 9th International Auchenorrhyncha Congress to be held at the Old
Quarantine Station at North Head overlooking the magnificent Sydney
Harbour in February 1997 is rapidly approaching. Current registrations
represent delegates from 12 nations, covering Asia, the Americas, Europe,
Africa and Australasia.

Conference sessions will include sections on phylogeny, bioacoustics,
systematics, ecology and economics (particularly auchenorrhynchous
pests of rice), as well as several general sessions. Dr George Rothschild,
Director of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines
has been invited to present a plenary address.

The social activities include a Welcome Reception, a beach-side barbecue
(the conference site has its own sandy beach) and a mid-conference field
trip to the magnificent Blue Mountains just west of Sydney. If time
permits, a quick look at preparation of the site for the Sydney Olympics
in 2000 will also be possible. The conference dinner will be held on one
of the comfortable cruise ships that ply Sydney Harbour and will feature
a post-dinner address by Dr Jeremy Evans, son of the eminent Australian
leafhopper worker, the late Dr John W. Evans.

Accompanying persons will have access to the tourist centres of Sydney,
including the historical Rocks area, the Sydney Opera House, Darling
Harbour and Taronga Park Zoo (one of the world's great zoos) via the
regular ferry service across the Harbour from Manly Wharf. The superb
ocean beach at Manly will also be within easy reach and the local area
includes bushwalks with spectacular views across the Harbour.

The conference has been sponsored by Rhone Poulenc, The Australian
Entomological Society, the Australian Academy of Science and the
Australian Ricegrowers Cooperative.

Further registrations, including papers/posters, are still welcome
although completed registration forms and abstracts of papers/posters
need to be completed immediately and faxed to the Conference organisers,
