The Education Abroad Program (EAP) is recruiting for an Instructor for its
Costa Rica Tropical Biology Program for Spring 1997.

EAP offers a one-quarter program in tropical biology at the Las Cruces
Biological Station in southern Costa Rica, an internationally known center
for biological, agroecological, and horticultural research, scientific
training, and public education.  The Station covers approximately 532 acres
and includes the Wilson Botanical Garden.  Twenty-four undergraduate
students from the eight UC campuses are expected to participate in this

Responsibilities:  (All responsibilities will be carried out under the
direction of the Program Coordinator and EAP administrative staff.)

1. Teach course entitled "Population, Community and Conservation Ecology,"
as part of an integrated curriculum for undergraduates in applied tropical
biology in Costa Rica, with agroecology and Spanish language and culture.
This course examines individual and species interactions that help determine
patterns of succession and biological diversity in the tropics.

2. Assist Program Coordinator in implementation of program schedules and
logistics, including field trips, homestays etc.

3. Advise on and supervise student independent study projects; help students
with projects and final reports.

4. Participate in the student orientation.  Assist students with social,
cultural, personal, housing and health problems, and be available to assist
in times of need and emergency.

Program Dates:   April 1- June 13, 1997.  The program commences with a
lengthy field trip (approx. 10 days) and subsequent weeks include several
other field overnights.

Qualifications:  M.S. or Ph. D. and experience teaching field courses.
Knowledge of Costa Rica and Spanish.

Salary:  Commensurate with education and teaching experience. Room and meals
