As a compliment to Gleason & Cronquist, I would suggest to your student the
"Flora of West Virginia" by P.D. Strausbaugh & Earl L. Core.  The 2nd
edition (published as 4 volumes in the 1970's) was reprinted in a 1-volume
format in the 1980's.  Although it will lack some elements of central and
western KY flora, the remainder of the flora should be quite similar.
And...there are line drawings of most all the taxa presented...a big help
when faced with unfamiliar genera.
