   11th International Conference - April 27-29, 1997.
   University of Virginia, Charlottesville VA, USA

The Society for the History of Natural History announces its 11th
International Conference and welcomes all interested participants. This
year's Conference will focus on "The Natural Bridge: The Trans-Atlantic
Exchange." Speakers will present talks on various aspects of the
scientific exploration of North America by Europeans, the flow of
information and collections across the Atlantic in both directions, and
the development of American scientific efforts and institutions. The
program will also include a special presentation commemmorating the
350th anniversary of the birth of Maria Sybilla Merian by Florence
F.J.M. Pieters, University of Amsterdam; Peter Hatch, Director of
Gardens and Grounds for Monticello, will deliver the Ramsbottom lecture.

The Conference will include, in addition, a formal dinner in the
University's Rotunda Dome Room (optional: additional fee), a tour of
Monticello, and several day-trips to natural sites, gardens, and
libraries of interest in the Virginia/D.C. region (optional: additional

The cost to attend the Conference is $125.00 for Society members,
$135.00 for non-members, plus additional fees as selected. Most meals
during the 3 days of the Conference are included. Accomodations are the
responsibility of the participants; blocks of rooms have been set aside
