Fees for Herbarium Loans

Many thanks to all of you who responded with very useful suggestions in
regard to my Chair's suggestion that the Herbarium charge a fee for
processing loan requests (and also charge for postage).

The comments focused on two issues:

1) the Herbarium is analogous to a Library and can't charge a fee for loans
any more than a Library can.

2) it is to our advantage to have specialists borrow our collections because
their annotation enhance the value of our collection.

In addition, a number of people also raised the issue of WHO is requesting
the loan (i.e., nonprofit versus profit).

I incorporated both 1) and 2) into my letter, but did not raise the third
issue because I felt it might cloud the point I am trying to make.

If anyone would like to see my letter, I am happy to share it with you, and
I will let you know what the response is.

Again, many thanks to all of you!

Best -
