Code of Zoological Nomenclature

Dear Dr Janssens,

I have seen your HTML version of the 1995 Discussion Draft of the
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature on WWW. It is very nicely
produced, but although the (then) status of the text is mentioned in the
Introduction it should be made absolutely clear that this is a now
completely out-of-date draft!

More than 500 comments on that draft were received by the "closing date" of
31 May 1996; they were fully considered first by the Code Editorial
Committee, which made extensive revisions, and then by the International
Commission on Zoological Nomenclature and an open meeting at last August's
ICSEB Congress in Budapest. These meetings agreed on major points of
principle which are in some respects very different from those in the 1995
tentative draft; the meetings are summarised in last December's Bulletin of
Zoological Nomenclature (vol. 53, Part 4). The Commission is now considering
the extensively revised draft. It is planned that the definitive new Code
will be published at the end of 1997 and that its provisions will come into
formal effect on 1 January 1999.

I mention this because otherwise "readers" of your text may well believe
that it represents the new Code; furthermore, those who made comments may
wrongly believe that their suggestions were ignored. It would be helpful if
you would make the situation clear to members of Taxacom.
