Further to Scaevola etymology:
fm. the Gk. scaevus = left-handed or awkward, perhaps in reference to the
unilabiate flowers.
There are a couple of love stories in Hawaiian lore about how this
half-flower originated.  See e.g., Marie Neal's In gardens of Hawaii,
1965.
