Hi, everybody. The Vrba reference that John Grehan asked for the other day is:

Vrba, E. S. 1995. On the connections between paleoclimate and evolution.
Pp. 24-45 In: Paleoclimate and Evolution, with Emphasis on Human Origins.
Yale University Press, New Haven. 547pp.

There are two domains of "common knowledge" that are not really common and
sometimes confounded in discussions of macroevolutionary pattern. The
first is that there is no a priori relationship between speciation and
functional differentiation. The other, dealt with articulately in this
article, is the importance of the interaction between landscape (exogenous)
and genetic (endogenous) influences in adaptive radiations.

wasteful. How true that is." -- Vice President Dan Quayle
