You may have noticed that folks gave two different answers, though - there
are actually two species in the genus Bassariscus. The Ringtail (SW U.S.
and Mexico) is B. astuta, and the Central American Cacomistle is B.
sumichrasti. This may be why your colleague was in doubt.
