Easter Island Palms

I read in a general reference about Easter Island that the island was once
covered with a lush forest of palms. These became "extinct" as a result of
deforestation by inhabitants of the island. Was Easter Island habitat for
an endemic palm, or is it likely the reference meant extirpation rather
than extinction?
