THE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF THE "REVISTA DE LA SOCIEDAD MEXICANA DE
HISTORIA NATURAL, FROM 1938 TO NOW, IN A FULL TEXT VERSION IN CD-ROM
The Mexican Society of Natural History (S.M.H.N) is one of the oldest
scientific societies in Mexico. It was founded in 1868 by a
distinguished group of naturalists, we can mention Alfonso Herrera,
Alfredo Duges, Jose Ramirez, Alfonso L. Herrera among many others.
After a period of inactivity due to the Mexican Revolution, the Society
restarted its activities in 1936 and still continues them. In these 60
years of work it has produced one of the most important scientific
publications in Mexico: the "Revista de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia
In the pages of the Society's Journal, the most important Iberoamerican
scientists have written articles that cover a broad thematic scope. The
topics treated in the Journal were those related with the natural
sciences in general: biology, botany, zoology, entomology , forestry,
agronomy, protozoology, public health and history of science, among
In the group of collaborators we can cite: Dr. Enrique Beltran, Dr.
Candido Bolivar, Dr. Efraim Hernandez, Dr. Osorio Taffal, Dr. Arturo
Gomez Pompa, Dr. Gonzalo Halffter, Dr. Hector Mayagoitia, among many
others, including some distinguished scientists from other countries
like: Richard Goldschmidt, Bill Vogt, Roger Heim, Marcel Prenant, and A.
There are very few complete collections, even in Mexico, and many
volumes, specially those from the early years are now out of print. In
some foreign libraries there are some isolated issues.
The Instituto Mexicano de Recursos Naturales Renovables IMERNAR,
(Mexican Institute of Renewable Natural Resources) founded in 1952, the
oldest and most respected NGO in Mexico dealing with conservation of
nature, in an effort for rescuing important scientific publications,
worth of being in every academic library, in Mexico, as in other
countries, has published the electronic version of the Revista.
It contains more than 900 articles, and more than 25,000 references,
easy to locate and retreive. The full text is contained in a CD-ROM,
with 142 Mb of information.
This product was developed as an Infobase using Folio Views one of the
most modern tools for text management and information retrieval. This
program is a world standard for long document management, and allows for
complex searches, and electronic editing.
