I am working on a revision of a genus of SE Asian millipeds and am stumped
trying to find the coordinates of some of my localities. I am sure that
all of you have had this experience. Names get changed, mistakes are made
in copying labels, and some correct place names on labels are just to small
or obscure to appear in gazeteers.
All of the names below have been checked through the database maintained by
the US Commission on Geographic names
(http://188.8.131.52/gns/html/index.html) and so are not going to be easy
to find. I have also exhausted the supply of Atlases and Gazeteers in our
little library. All this so you will know that this is truly a last
resort! I am hoping for some responses perhaps from in-country denizens or
from collectors who have visited the places in question.
A place in eastern Java that was known in Dutch colonial times as Buitenzorg.
A place in Irian Jaya that was known in Dutch colonial times as
Wisselmaren; may now be known as Enartodi, or Enartodi may be nearby.
A place in Sumatera Utara named Bangun Delek.
In Pahang, Awana, a place in the "Genting Highlands"
In Sarawak, Santubong "32 km N of Kuching". The problem is that 32 km N of
Kuching puts Santubong well out to
In Leyte, Lake Danao (there are many places named Danao but no lake could
Leyte: Does anyone know what the acronym VISCA stands for in the vicinity
Mindanao: Surely the name "Mt. McKinley" has been changed! But to what?

A really embarrasing one--can't find Thale Ban National Park. It may have
been recently established.
