Two NERC PhD Studentships in Systematics/Conservation Genetics,
Centre for Plant Diversity and Systematics, The University of Reading

Applicants should submit a CV with the names of two referees, and a
covering letter by Tuesday 1st June. Interviews will be held in the week
beginning Monday 14 June. Candidates must be UK residents.

1. A molecular and morphological phylogenetic study of the
Peltophorum group (Caesalpinioideae; Leguminosae)
Supervisor Dr J. A. Hawkins
The integration of systematic theory with practice, particularly to guide the
use of data from morphology and molecules in monographic studies, is at
the heart of modern systematics. There is no monograph treatment of the
Peltophorum group. The group comprises 48 species placed in 13 genera,
three of which are monotypic. A monographic study will contribute to the
resolution of the taxonomy of the group and to the ongoing international
collaborative endeavour to understand the relationships within the family.

2. Systematics and/or conservation genetics of the Macaronesian flora
Supervisor Dr A. Culham
A studentship is available for the study of taxonomic and biogeographic
aspects of an element of the Macaronesian vascular flora. Several possible
genera are under consideration and final choice will depend on the
experience and aptitude of the applicant selected. This project will form
part of an on-going collaborative research programme into the taxonomy
and conservation of plants in the region.
