                   Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) has a vacancy for a Higher
Scientific Officer (pensionable Salary £17,200) for a three year BBSRC
funded project exploring the capturing and relating of character concept
definitions in plant taxonomy. This is a joint project between the RBGE
and the Database and Object Systems Group of Napier University. The
successful candidate will join an already successful team of bio-
informatics specialists working to improve the rigour and quality of
taxonomic data storage and dissemination.

The work will involve close collaboration with the Napier team to
formulate and refine a generalised character space model that can be
used to capture any character concept. The successful candidate will be
expected to help produce and test this model and use it to create a
foundation set of character concept definitions. We intend to cover a
wide range of materials and the candidate will work with data ranging
from the most up to date molecular results through to examination of
traditional morphological characters such as those found in standard
floras and monographs.

Candidates must have an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in taxonomy and relevant
experience in identification and the use of character concepts.

project can be found at
