Ledyard Stebbins, the plant evolutionary biologist (some would say the
*first* plant evolutionary biologist) died last Wednesday at the age of 94.
He had been physically infirm for several years, but was still mentally
sharp last summer when he spoke at the International Botanical Congress in
St. Louis.

I'd like to offer a personal tribute. Great scientists often accomplish as
much by their mistakes as by their successes, and Ledyard was no exception.
I and many others have done our own small parts to advance the field by
working to prove him wrong about one thing or another. I'll always be
grateful for the opportunity he afforded me.
