GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, is an open-ended, coordinated body based on a multilateral agreement between countries, economies and relevant international organisations, with the purpose to make computerized scientific biodiversity data freely available via the internet. GBIF was officially established 1st March, 2001, and currently consists of 19 Voting and 14 Associate Participants (www.gbif.org).

The Executive Secretary will act as the chief executive officer of GBIF and will have the authority to enter into contracts and administer funds on behalf of GBIF. The responsibilities of the Executive Secretary are to oversee the execution of the Work Programme and expenditure of the Budget; to recommend to the Governing Board the hiring of such staff as may be required to carry out the Work Programme; to supervise the work of the GBIF Secretariat and its staff, including consultants and seconded personnel; to prepare and submit to the Governing Board a draft annual Work Programme and a Budget; and to provide the Governing Board with a technically substantive annual report on the Work Programme, including financial accounts, tasks achieved, tasks not achieved and any appropriate explanations. 
Expected qualifications of the successful candidate include excellent leadership, negotiation skills, and experience in managing multilateral (including international) projects, experience in developing and implementing science policy at national and international levels, and a deep understanding of biological sciences, particularly in the fields of biodiversity, biodiversity informatics, and biological systematics.
The Executive Secretary will work at the location of the GBIF Secretariat Host in Denmark at the Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen (http://www.zmuc.dk), which is expected to be fully operational on 1st October, 2001. The post is available for 5 years starting on 1st October, 2001. The salary will be negotiable on an individual basis.
