 I forward the following notice from Dr Junko Shimura about the approaching GTI regional workshop to be held in Kuala Lumpur in September, for the information of TAXACOMers in the broad Asian region who may not have heard about it before. 
Please check out the website for further details. We are anxious that there should be as broad a range of participants from the region as possible.

I am pleased to announce that the 1st Global Taxonomy Initiative
regional workshop in Asia will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
on 10-13 September, 2002.

Species 2000 Asia Oceania Forum will be held as a side event
on 14th September. 

If you could kindly disseminate this information with the
URL below to your colleagues and relevant institutes in your
country, I am very grateful.


Prior to the workshop, we have sent out questionnaire for
taxonomic needs and capacity assessment. If you have not
received the questionnaire from NIES or through your country's
GTI/CBD focal point, please print out the questionnaire from
the web and send it by FAX as soon as possible. 
NB: questionnaire is to collect answer from researchers who
work in Asia.

If you are willing to attend the Species 2000 AO forum, please, 
would you participate to the discussion on GTI at the workshop. 
Minimum travel support for the working group members will be informed later with invitation letter, if you have your own fund to attend the GTI workshop and the forum, please let me know at 
junko at It will allow us to invite participants from developing countries in the region.

We ask pre-registration to find out the number of participants.
When you decide to attend the meeting, please, register your
name and required information by yourself through the web.
Submission of abstract is optional. However, the abstract will
be printed and distributed at the workshop, which will be a good
resource to find collaborators in Asia for the GTI regional project.
I would strongly recommend to submit the abstract if you
are seeking future collaboration under GTI.
