Location: Wageningen
The universities of Leiden, Utrecht and Wageningen have formed the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN). The section plant systematics of the Biosystematics Group forms the Wageningen branch of the NHN.
Position information:
The PhD student will undertake the project "Evolution of Isolona and Monodora (Annonaceae) in Africa", leading to a PhD thesis. The research will focus on revealing the evolutionary history of both genera, with an emphasis on the context of the geological and palaeoclimatological history of tropical Africa. Besides an alpha-taxonomic study, phylogenetic analyses using morphological and molecular data, molecular clock dating, and a cladistic biogeographical analysis will be performed. An emphasis will also be placed on the evolution of floral characteristics, which are very diverse in this group. The suitable candidate will be expected to inititate and publish his/her research, assist in the formulation of project proposals (2nd and 3rd financing), contribute to the supervision of students and make a substantial contribution to the educational program of the Group.
What we require:
- graduate biologist with specialisation in the field of plant systematics
- experience with the application of molecular techniques, phylogenetics and cladistic biogeographic analyses
- experience in scientific publishing
- ability to perform the above tasks independently
- good organisational and communicative skills
What we offer:
- temporary employment for a period of four years for a full 40 hours a week. Salary will be 1,683 Euros in the first year going up to 2,258 Euros in the fourth, gross per month based on a full week.
