The E-Type Initiative and the E-Type Starter Kit

The Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, in collaboration
with the All Species Foundation and Conservation International would like to
announce the creation of the E-Type Initiative website at <
http://insects.oeb.harvard.edu/etypes>. This new resource has been developed
in order to help museum collections worldwide create and distribute digital
documentation of their biological type specimen holdings. The central part
of this new website is the E-Type Starter Kit, which includes protocols for
digital photography of specimens, data management, data backup procedures,
and recommended imaging equipment. The Kit has been developed based on the
experience of creating online type databases at the MCZ, Harvard University
and the Jardin Botanico Nacional in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It
also includes links to free software used by these institutions to store and
distribute their specimen information.
Currently, the focus of the E-type Starter Kit is the documentation of
entomological and botanical specimens, but in the future imaging protocols
for other taxa will be included.

The E-Type Starter Kit is available both as an online resource and a CD-ROM
available free of charge based on individual requests.

Regards,
Piotr Naskrecki
