Vacancy for Orchidologist at NHN-Leiden

The Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (NHN) is composed of three branches:
Leiden, Utrecht and Wageningen. The NHN-L is closely allied with the Hortus
Botanicus (HB) and is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences of Leiden University. NHN-L and HB have jointly developed a
research program on the orchids of SE Asia and harbour collections of world-
class importance for this purpose. Morphological and molecular techniques
are used to study the taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, and ontogeny of
the orchids of Malesia. Research results are incorporated in scientific
publications, interactive CD-ROM’s, databases, and local language guides.

Because of the retirement of the orchidologist at NHN-L, Leiden University
has a vacancy for an

ORCHID TAXONOMIST, 38 h F/M (level: Researcher 3)

Job description and tasks:
- Research: establish a strong research programme in the systematics of SE
Asian Orchidaceae. The prime focus in on taxonomic revisions and
checklists, supplemented by fieldwork and active participation in (inter)
national networks.
- Teaching: contribute to the Leiden University BSc-curriculum and MSc-
programme in Biology, Local Taxonomy Training courses in Malesian sister
institutes, and supervision of PhD projects in the national research school
Biodiversity.
- Management: curation and databasing of herbarium specimens, alcohol-
preserved, image, and living collections of orchids.
- Fundraising: both for research and fieldwork, in particular to continue
and extend the CD-ROM series on Papua New Guinean orchids.

Required capacities:
- A PhD in plant systematics
- Extensive expertise in orchid research, morphological, taxonomic,
phylogenetic and/or floristic studies, electronic identification and
presentation tools
- Experience with fieldwork in SE Asia will be an advantage
