Full Time Professor of Systematic botany / Director of the NATIONAAL
HERBARIUM NEDERLAND (NHN)/ Scientific Director of the Leiden Hortus Botanicus

Vacancy number 4-193

The responsibilities of the vacant position are:
Scientific leadership of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands.
Integrated management of the NHN-Leiden.
Coordination of and active participation in the teaching programme of
NHN-Leiden at BSc, MSc and PhD level (in cooperation with colleagues of the
Department of Biology of Leiden University and of the National Research
School Biodiversity).
External communication and fund raising, both nationally and internationally
Exploring synergies with the Institute of Biology and with the Natural
History Museum Naturalis in Leiden.
Scientific leadership of the Hortus Botanicus in the development of its
research and teaching collections.

We look for an inspiring, innovative and versatile plant systematist of
international standing. The candidate should have a strong vision on future
developments, building on existing strengths of the NHN in taxonomy and
flora-writing, morphology- and DNA-based phylogenetics, biogeography and
biodiversity assessment, and collection-based information systems, as
formulated in the multi-annual research plan of the NHN.  From the
successful candidate we require:

Proven excellence in research in one or more of the thematic areas of the NHN.
Good teaching skills in systematics at all academic levels, in particular
the supervision of PhD-students.
Proven qualities in research management and good interpersonal and
communication skills.
A good track record of successful research grant applications.
An appreciation of the value of collections and their curation as
indispensable tools in systematic botany
