I've added the contents of the 2005 edition of the Species 2000 & ITIS
Catalogue of Life: 2005 Annual Checklist to the Taxonomy Search Engine
( ).

There is considerable overlap with some of the other sources, notably
ITIS and uBio, but the 2005 edition has added some major new databases
(such as the BioSystematic Database of World Diptera, and the World
Spider Catalogue) that don't as yet provide an easy way for the
Taxonomic Search Engine to query them directly. Unlike the other
sources TSE queries, the Catalogue of Life names are served from a
local copy of the database in Glasgow, rather than fetched over the
Internet. This somewhat defeats the original intent of TSE (i.e., no
data locally, all on the web), but the Catalogue of Life web site
doesn't provide an easy means for software to query the database.

If you view the details of a name you will also get a link (where
available) to the original source database. The TSE also serves LSIDs
for these names, and uses tags from the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative
( to provide information on source database and
