Dear Colleagues,

in this week's issue of 'Nature' an international group of zoologists led by the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature presents an initiative* which might make zootaxonomical work much easier and more accessible: ZooBank, an open-access web-register would provide all new taxonomic names in zoology with bibilographic information, and ideally with facsimiles of the original descriptions. This service would be combined with the requirement of registration of all new zoological names.
This project would have far-reaching consequences for taxonomical working-practices and will work only with the support of the zootaxonomical community. Therefore, we are keen to facilitate open discussion of the ZooBank project in the taxonomic community. An online discussion list has been established at http://list.afriherp.org/mailman/listinfo/zoobank-list, and a technical discussion paper has been posted at http://www.iczn.org/new%20ZooBank.htm
At the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Fort Lauderdale, a late-breaking symposium on 9 November will provide informative talks about and beyond ZooBank and offer a panel discussion of the idea of a central open-access registry of taxonomic names and descriptions (schedule below).
You are all invited to join the symposium and enter the debate. Information about the ESA meeting can be found at http://www.entsoc.org/annual_meeting/current_meeting/
Sincerely
Frank Krell
