Graduate Student Assistantship Position in Mycology (Lichens) at The Field
Museum, Chicago: One assistantship is available for a PhD student
interested in studying the systematics of a tropical lichen group as part
of a NSF-funded project. The student’s dissertation will focus on the
phylogeny and systematics of the tropical Thelotremataceae. The project
emphasizes training in 1) the diverse components of collections-based
studies, including light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and
chromatographic techniques, 2) molecular techniques, phylogenetic
reconstruction, data handling, analysis and electronic dissemination of
information, and 3) field work in the tropics, e.g. the Philippines and
Thailand. Experience in lichen studies or molecular systematics is
advantageous. The successful candidate will join a group using
multidisciplinary approaches in systematic research. Field Museum
mycologists/lichenologists include Thorsten Lumbsch and Robert Lücking
(lichenized fungi), Sabine Huhndorf (nonlichenized Ascomycetes), Gregory
Mueller, Patrick Leacock (macrofungi). For more information contact: Dr.
