Indeed, you are correct-- the definition should probably include a broader
spectrum of the specialties, including taxonomy.. To make my proposed
definition more broad:
"Systematics is the science of organizing biological entities (e.g.,
organisms) into directed hierarchical structures (e.g., phylogenies and
taxonomies) or other structured organizations of life on Earth."
