Position Available: Curatorial Assistant in The New York Botanical Garden Herbarium

The New York Botanical Garden Herbarium has an opening for a CURATORIAL
ASSISTANT in the Herbarium to participate in an NSF-funded Brazilian
specimen catalogue.


Job duties:


Enter information from labels of Brazilian plant specimens into computer

Take digital images of specimens

Curate, select, and file specimens according to taxonomic and geographic

Other collections-related tasks as needed


Reports to: Dr. Jacquelyn Kallunki (jkallunki at nybg.org), Associate
Director and Curator of the Herbarium


Experience and qualifications required:


Familiarity with scientific plant names and other biological information
and South American geography

Organized, detail-oriented, and accurate in all work

Capacity for efficient data entry of botanical and geographical

Experience with databases and herbarium methods

Able to reach specimens in cabinets 8 ft high and at ground level

Good verbal and written communication skills

Working knowledge (conversational and written) of Portuguese (or
Spanish) a plus


Education:  A minimum of a B.S. or B.A. in plant biology; taxonomy
coursework preferred


Salary: $27,000 per year, plus benefits


Starting Date: Negotiable, but as soon after 1 June 2006 as possible
