Following up on the thread of protistan (i.e. eukaryotic) diversity I
would recommend the recent paper by Adl et al. 2005. "The New
Higher Level Classification of Eukaryotes with Emphasis on
the Taxonomy of Protists." The Journal of Eukaryotic
Microbiology. October 2005 - Vol. 52 Issue 5 Page 399-451.

It represents the latest synthesis of molecular and morphological
data to generate a robust classification scheme but avoids such
encumbering terms as "kingdoms".
