The University of Paris 6 (UPMC) has an opening for a Biodiversity Informatician/Biologist in the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT) Work package 5 “Platform for Cybertaxonomy” (WP5) over an 18 month period.

Job duties

The applicant will evaluate and document the descriptive tools used in taxonomic descriptions in close interaction with European taxonomists. All documentation and reports will be written in English. The position involves extensive travel throughout Europe in order to analyse the existing and missing functionalities of descriptive tools. The resulting documentation will be used to integrate descriptive tools into the platform of cybertaxonomy. 

Experience and qualifications required

Essential: The applicant will have excellent communication skills, be able to speak English and French fluently and have experience in writing scientific reports in English. The applicant will be able to show that they can work independently using their own initiative and will have a good working knowledge of taxonomy, systematics and the taxonomic work process. A Masters degree in biological sciences (preferably in taxonomy and systematics), or equivalent qualification are expected. 
Desired: Data-processing competences (XML, bases programming, dynamic Web) as well as a working knowledge of existing descriptive software programs (e.g. Xper2, DeltaAccess) are desired.

Interviews will take place during late March at LIS UMR 5143 (MNHN - UPMC -CNRS) University Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris 6, 12 rue Cuvier 75005 Paris France. The successful applicant is expected to start work by April 23rd, 2007.
