The Missouri Botanical Garden is searching for an Associate Editor to work with the MBG Press team. This position is located in St. Louis, Missouri.
Primary responsibilities of the Associate Editor include copy editing, author correspondence, and communication with printer through page proof and printed production for scientific manuscripts for two peer-reviewed, quarterly journals (the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden and NOVON, A Journal for Botanical Nomenclature). Other responsibilities include assisting the Managing Editor with editing and production of book-length botanical monographs and floras, including production oversight for the Flora of China series. The Associate Editor would interact closely with the Managing Editor and Scientific Editor for the Missouri Botanical Garden Press.
Works with the managing editor on scheduling journal articles. Works with the managing editor and other editorial assistance on copyediting. Communicates with authors. Prepares and submits manuscripts to the printer. Works with the printer to ensure timely publication. Communicates with the printer regarding problems in finished product. Communicates with authors and inserts author's corrections as appropriate. Reads through manuscript proofs and inserts editorial corrections, with approval by managing editor. Checks revised proofs and final corrections.
For book projects such as the Flora of China series, edits text and captions. Delivers text and figures to bid contractors for scanning and page composition. Checks printer proofs. Works with the managing editor and the printer on book shipments, which include overseas markets.
* B.S. in English, Journalism, Biology/Botany or related degree
* Ideal candidate must be proficient in copyediting and formatting
* Outstanding skills in English grammar, spelling, and syntax
* Demonstrated ability to manage time and manuscript projects in support of publication schedules
* Knowledge of foreign languages is desirable, particularly Spanish and Latin
* Familiarity with biology/botany and scientific research preferred
