I recently stuck my head out with the thesis that species ARE individuals, but of a peculiar kind: that is, clusters. It seems to have been stillborne; but if anyone is interested, the paper can be found at "Biology and Philosophy, 2006, 21:353-367". Or maybe I could manage a pdf.
