A Google search for
     "singular or plural in construction" site:www.merriam-webster.com
returns 500 examples. These don't include collective nouns, presumably 
because it goes without saying (except on Taxacom) that these can be 
singular or plural in construction. See the Wikipedia articles 'Collective 
noun' and 'Synesis', and the usage note at
     http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=collective%20noun
