The Ocean Biogeographical Information System (OBIS) is a distributed
information system, providing species distribution data on line through
www.iobis.org <http://www.iobis.org/> . Data are harvested from a large
number of data providers, and made available, after integration and quality
control, through a portal web site. The portal allows searching by taxonomy,
geography or a combination of both, and provides links back to web sites of
data providers.
OBIS is looking to hire a portal manager, to be stationed at the OBIS
secretariat at Rutgers, New Brunswick. Key duties of the portal manager will
be
* Coordinate implementation of new features in the OBIS portal, in
collaboration with the portal software developer; monitor quality of the
portal, and assist in identifying possible improvements of existing
functionality.
* Assist in managing data and metadata streams in and out of OBIS: in
consultation with the OBIS Executive Director approach potential data
provider and invite them to publish their data holdings through OBIS;
automate steps in data ingestion and indexing, and data quality control, in
collaboration with the portal software developer; quality control of
metadata description of datasets published through iOBIS; document data- and
metadata streams.
* Coordinate community-based testing of OBIS: develop and implement
tools to facilitate user feedback, both on content of the OBIS data holdings
and the portal interface.
* Participate in externally funded research programmes in
collaboration with other OBIS employees; assist in developing proposals to
funding agencies.
* Assist in maintaining the computer infrastructure of the OBIS
secretariat and portal.
* Report to Executive Director of OBIS on a regular basis: discuss
issues concerning functionality and performance of web portal; quality
control issues concerning data published through iOBIS; data gaps and
potential new data providers.
The successful candidate will have
* An MSc in Biology or related science; a PhD is preferred
* A good understanding of biogeography and taxonomy
* An extensive and wide-ranging knowledge of IT, including knowledge
of web based tools and proven experience with relational database
management.
The salary of the successful candidate will be between 60,000 and 70,000
