Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Plant Biology - Vacancy

Department of Biological Sciences

University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand

We seek a permanent full-time lecturer or senior lecturer in Plant
Biology. The successful applicant will be a developing leader in this
field, with a substantial publication record and evidence of
international connections. She or he will have experience in and enjoy
teaching at all levels. Experience in research student supervision is
also essential. Research is an integral component of this position. The
appointee will have a well-developed research record and potential
ability to attract external funding for their work. S/he will have
demonstrated a capacity for running a research group. We are looking for
a person with energy and vision who wants to push the boundaries and has
an eagerness to search out and pursue research opportunities. We require
a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. We require
expertise in modern approaches to plant biology including integrative or
quantitative approaches from genomic through to ecophysiological.

The Department of Biological Sciences ranked first in the 2006 New
Zealand Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) assessment in the Ecology
Evolution and Behaviour, and Molecular, Cellular and Whole Organism
Biology areas. The Department is entering the third year of its
FRST-funded Outcome Based Investment (OBI) in Freshwater Ecology
research worth $10M over ten years. Other FRST funded research
programmes include urban ecosystem restoration and restoration of
indigenous forest patches in rural landscapes. In addition, the
Department has for many years managed a strong terrestrial Antarctic
research programme. Synergies with any of these programmes will be
expected, as will development of stronger connections with sector based
plant biology, depending on the applicant's expertise and interests. The
Department offers an interesting, lively and collegial environment. It
covers a wide range of specialist areas including biochemistry, botany,
ecology, marine biology, microbiology, physiology, genetics and zoology
and currently has around 100 graduate and postgraduate students and 10
postdoctoral researchers. Located centrally in Hamilton, we are close
to New Zealand's Crown Research Institutes including AgResearch,
HortResearch, Landcare Research and NIWA which together with the
University of Waikato comprise some 25% New Zealand's science
researchers.
