The Hortus botanicus Leiden and the National Herbarium of the Netherlands (NHN), Leiden University branch (NHN-L), Plant diversity of the Indopacific and tropical Asia (PITA) research group, are offering a:
PHD POSITION (F/M) (38 hours per week)

The PITA group is an active, internationally oriented research group with a strong focus on the flora of South-East Asia. Our research facilities include a rich collection of living plants in the botanical garden (collections with Orchidaceae, Apocynaceae [Dischida, Hoya], myrmecophytic Rubiaceae, and carnivorous plants) and the herbarium collection which is one of the leading collections in Europe and par excellence useful for anatomical and molecular/evo-devo research (incl. ancient DNA lab), SEM and TEM laboratories.
Who fits the shoe?
You must have a degree (drs/MSc) in Biology and have a strong interest and experience in plant taxonomy preferably including molecular and or SEM/TEM techniques. To obtain the available position you have to write a two A4 research proposal, naturally based on the collections available in the botanical garden and the NHN. As a person you are a driven and self-confident scientist to be with excellent analytical and communicational skills.
We offer you an appointment for a period of one year with a prolongation up to four years. The appointment must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis. During your appointment you will be supervised by Dr. Paul Kessler as your co-promotor. Prof. Dr. Erik Smets is promotor.
The gross monthly salary is € 2000,- in the first year and increases progressively each year to € 2558,- in the fourth year in accordance to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).
