In the light of Poly Winsor's recent work, this sounds more to me
like Mayr using racism as a rhetorical instrument against the
morphological species concept than as statement about the biology of
race.
See, for example, Winsor, M.P. 2006. Linnaeus's biology was not
Essentialist. Ann.Missori.Bot.Gard.93:2-7.
