"Less common than it used to be" doesn't necessarily mean "uncommon". 
There are plenty of people in the US who support the policies of Barack
Obama but won't vote for him because they feel he will "put too many
colored people in positions of power over the white race" (a direct
quote), and a whole lot more who think "there's just something about
him" that makes them uncomfortable.
