Yes, but whether we like it or not, the meaning of words evolves over time.
The real question is whether the evolutionary history of words can be
reconstructured looking only at the sequence of letters and deducing the
synapocharacter characters, or whether other "epicharacter" factors (like
pronunciation) are also informative....
