PhD Position : Global Change and Peatland Microbial Diversity
A PhD position is available jointly between The Royal Botanic Garden
Edinburgh and the Environmental Research Institute (Thurso). The
successful candidate will work on an interdisciplinary project examining
patterns of desmid diversity in Scottish peatlands, in response to
environmental drivers at nested spatial-scales. Focussing on climate
change, the research will integrate with the 'Caithness Carbon Catchment
Experiment', a whole ecosystem-scale initiative, in order to explore the
relationship between taxonomic diversity and ecosystem function. The PhD
is fully-funded by SNH and SEPA.
Candidates should possess a good first degree in a biological subject
(class 1, or 2.1), or a relevant MSc. Applicants should possess a
driving licence or be willing to organise transport to field-sites.
Fieldwork will be conducted in remote and challenging environments, and
candidates should possess an appropriate degree of personal
responsibility and self-discipline.
