Dear Colleagues,

With regret we note the passing of Prof. Alain Liogier on 9 November 2009 at the age of 93 in Ft. Worth, Texas.

Prof. Henri Alain Liogier was born in France but worked for many years on the flora of the Greater Antilles, starting in Cuba where he originally arrived as a brother of the Catholic Church. Here he collected extensively and wrote the Flora de Cuba under the name Hermano Alain (Brother Alain). He then moved to the Dominican Republic, and produced the Flora de la EspaƱola (Flora of Hispaniola) under his own name, and then moved on to Puerto Rico, where he worked in the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico and wrote the Flora of Puerto Rico and Adjacent Islands, again under his own name. After retiring from there, he and his wife Perfa moved to Ft. Worth where they have family, and continued his work as an emeritus botanist at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT).

There is an on-line obituary in the Dallas Star-Telegram at:

Additional information and a tribute will be presented in an upcoming issue of BRIT's bulletin, Iridos.
