PhD position in Floral Structure and Evolution / Plant Systematics 

at the University of Vienna

A PhD position (University Assistant/Prae doc) funded by the Faculty of Life
Sciences is available in the Department of Structural and Functional Botany,
Faculty Centre of Biodiversity, University of Vienna.

 

Duration of employment is 3 years.

 

Expected starting date: according to agreement

 

Project description

The successful candidate will work with Jürg Schönenberger and collaborators
on a larger project on comparative floral structure and evolution of the
asterid order Ericales. 

The project aims to comparatively study floral structure of selected
ericalean subclades and to compile an order-wide morphological data set for
phylogenetic analysis. This will allow for the incorporation of fossil taxa
into phylogenetic analyses and for detailed reconstructions of character
evolution. Research tasks will include fieldwork, morphological lab work
(including microtomy, scanning electron microscopy, micro computer x-ray
tomography) as well as phylogenetic analyses.

 

Place of work

The Faculty Centre of Biodiversity in Vienna consists of three botanical and
one zoological department as well as a botanical garden. The overall
botanical research topic is patterns and processes in evolution and ecology.
The Faculty Centre offers a stimulating working environment and excellent
research facilities including state-of-the-art laboratories for
morphological as well as for molecular work.

 

Requirements

- A Diploma or Masters degree, ideally in systematic botany or related
biological disciplines

- Experiences in the study of floral structure and/or phylogenetic analysis
are of advantage

- Excellent knowledge of English, written and oral
