Taxacom subscribers will miss Don's insightful contributions and often acerbic responses to discussion on this List. Apart from his extensive and detailed knowledge of the Australian Diptera fauna, he had a deep interest in systematic theory and enjoyed taking contrarian stances, especially to what he considered mainstream dogma.

In April 1960 he returned to CSIRO and was promoted to chief research scientist in the 70's. Don was the chief curator of the ANIC from 1971-1977 and worked with CSIRO until his retirement in 1987. He returned to CSIRO soon after his retirement as an Honorary Fellow and remained as such for the remainder of his life.
