This essay

is a thoughtful commentary on digitisation for digitisation's sake that seems germane here. The diagram of the steps digitisation -> contextualisation -> analysis (and the parallel "on the web" -> "in the web" -> "social objects") bears thinking about, especially in light of the responses to Donat's original email announcing pro-iBiosphere (awful, awful name).
